League Speaker Series (Monthly, 4th TUE from NOV [except DEC] to APR) are educational opportunities for our community and membership. Leaders in government, education, health care and other specialists speak with League members and the community. Admission to the presentation is free and open to the public.

APR 22, 2025 David G. Lewis, PhD | Reconstructing Traditional Kalapuyan Lifeways. Tickets for this speaker will be available after current speaker on MAR 25, 2025.
David G. Lewis, PhD, is a member of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde, a descendant of the Takelma, Chinook, Molalla, and Santiam Kalapuya peoples of western Oregon. David has engaged in research on the tribal histories of Northwest Coastal peoples, specializing in the Western Oregon Tribes. He is the author of Tribal Histories of the Willamette Valley (Ooligan Press, 2023).
David has a PhD in anthropology from the University of Oregon (2009) and, as an assistant professor at Oregon State University, teaches full time in Anthropology and Indigenous Studies. He also served as the director of the Southwest Oregon Research Project Collection at the University of Oregon, and was the Culture Department manager of the Grand Ronde Tribe for eight years. His research essays about the histories of the tribes are published on the blogsite The Quartux Journal: ndnhistoryresearch.com. David lives in Salem with his wife Donna, and sons Inatye and Saghaley.

In her current role as Executive Director, she is responsible for overseeing the overall operations of Head Start, including program development, fundraising, and community outreach. Her deep understanding of the organization’s mission and her commitment to equity and inclusion have guided her decisions and actions, ensuring that Head Start continues to provide high quality services to children and families in need. Currently, she also serves as the Oregon Head Start State Association President.

Ken Doctor is a veteran news executive, entrepreneur, and analyst who founded Lookout Santa Cruz in 2020, bringing his extensive experience in journalism and media innovation to create a fresh, community-centered model for local news. A graduate of both UC Santa Cruz and the University of Oregon School of Journalism, Ken has spent decades navigating the evolving news industry, serving as an executive at Knight Ridder Newspapers, and analyzing the digital transformation of the press. His insights, captured in his term “Newsonomics,” highlight the challenges and opportunities in the shifting economics of journalism. Building on the success of Lookout Santa Cruz, Ken is now spearheading the development of Lookout.

Combining membership support, advertising partner-ships, and unique student engagement programs, Lookout aims to enrich the lives of local residents by addressing critical issues like homelessness and racial inequity. JAN 28,2025 | Rabbi Ruhi Sophia Motzkin Rubenstein has served as the lead Rabbi of Temple Beth Israel: Center for Jewish Life in Eugene, Oregon, since her ordination from the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College in 2015. Prior to rabbinical training, she worked as a Jewish environmental educator with the Teva Learning Alliance and was a New Israel Fund Shatil Social Justice Fellow. She grew up in Saratoga Springs and has studied and lived in Costa Rica and Jerusalem. Ruhi Sophia graduated from Smith College in 2007.Since moving to Eugene, where she lives with her husband and three daughters, Rabbi Ruhi Sophia has been active in local, regional, and national interfaith social justice organizing. Rabbi Ruhi Sophia leads and composes liturgical music for her community and often leads chants and songs at local rallies and protests.

OCT 22, 2024 U.S. Magistrate Judge, the Honorable Mustafa Kasubhai. Appointed to the federal bench in 2018, Judge Kasubhai is the first Muslim to serve as a federal judge in the United States. Prior to his current role, he served as an Oregon State Circuit Court Judge, was a Board Member of the Oregon Workers’ Compensation Board, and practiced law in private practice. He graduated from the University of Oregon School of Law and earned his Bachelor of Science degree from UC Berkeley. In September 2023, President Biden nominated Judge Kasubhai to be the United States District Judge for the District of Oregon. He was born in Los Angeles, California, to parents who immigrated from Mumbai, India in the 1960s. Recently, Justice Kasubhai officiated at a Naturalization Ceremony which was held in the U.S. Courthouse in Eugene. He spoke passionately, from personal experience, about the contributions immigrants have always and will continue to make to our society.
